Magic Item Identification

In general, I don’t like the entire “I get to learn everything this magic item does for free” bit. As such, I’ll be modifying the magic item identification rules.

  1. Some items must be learned via a skill check. It may depend on the kind of item it is – perhaps Arcana, or Religion. Or, I may allow you to use any skill(s) you wish in attempt to identify it. Appropriate DCs will be set. Arcana will be the most likely, but a holy magic item may require religion, for instance.
  2. Some magic items may be well renowned for their place in history. As such, since there is no longer bardic knowledge, a History check may allow you to recognize significant markings identifying the item by name, and thus allowing one to recall stories of its use in historical battles of the past.
  3. I will also be adapting an Identify Magic Item or Bardic Lore ritual or some such to allow you to gather information where skills fail you.
  4. Finally, there may be some magic items that cannot be identified except via some special effort, quest, solving a riddle, etc.
